Centre for Maritime Environment and Safety in Horten-Norway utilizes seawater based Heat Pump with ammonia
At The Centre for Maritime
Environment and Safety ("Senter for Marint Miljø og
Sikkerhet") in Horten seawater is utilized both as energy source for the
Heat Pump and for the climate cooling during summer.

Heating
is mainly based on use of seawater based heat pump. Refrigerant is ammonia
in combination with single stage piston compressors. Rated heat output for
the heat pump is 225 kW. Water in heating circuit is then heated from 35 to 50 oC.
As supplementary heat 2 off oil fired boilers with a total output of 450
kW may be used. The seawater intake is located at 100 meters depth. This location gives more advantages. Little contamination and scaling reduce need of maintenance. During summer the temperature level (6-9 oC) provides for the necessary climate cooling directly ("free-cooling"). The heat pump was commissioned end of 1996 and has shown a reliable record. The coefficient of performance is between 4 and 5. |

Technical room is located in the middle building at the front (small and lower part of the building of bricks). The heat pump is installed in a separate gas tight room because of the applied refrigerant that is ammonia. Additional costs due to safety reasons and regulations compared to other possible refrigerants ("halocarbons") are not crucial. Use of ammonia in the heat pump was considered to be the most profitable. |
Thermoconsult has been involved in a great number of Heat Pump projects, small ones as well as large. Our competence within Heat Pump technology is comprehensive. The Heat Pump process is similar to the Refrigeration process. This we benefit on in our daily work, either we are involved in Heat Pump or Refrigeration projects.
Do not hesitate to contact us. Our competence may help you for most types of Heat Pumps and Heat Pump Systems.
